EMS Software Development / December 2004
Goals
- Deliver a dedicated sales platform for EMS software products, tailored to the company’s business model and integration needs.
- Build a custom CMS capable of supporting unlimited languages, enabling EMS to scale internationally while initially targeting four key markets.
- Establish a modular, XML‑driven architecture with XSLT templating, ensuring clean separation of concerns, long‑term maintainability, and efficient content rendering.
The CMS was designed to support an unlimited number of languages, giving EMS the flexibility to expand into new markets without architectural changes. The public‑facing site initially launched in four languages - English, German, French, and Russian - which covered the core markets EMS targeted. The platform was implemented in PHP and used XSLT as its templating engine. Each page was generated through a two‑phase pipeline: individual CMS modules produced structured XML documents, and an XSLT transformation layer converted that XML into final HTML. This separation of content, structure, and presentation made the system highly modular, easy to extend, and well‑suited for multi‑language content management. To keep the system maintainable and performant, the CMS was built around a modular architecture where each functional unit -navigation, product catalog, pricing, localization, promotions - exposed a well‑defined XML interface. This allowed individual modules to evolve independently and enabled new capabilities to be introduced without disrupting the rendering pipeline. Caching at both the XML and XSLT layers reduced transformation overhead and ensured fast page delivery even as the content library and language footprint grew.
Outcomes
- Launched a fully operational multilingual sales platform, enabling EMS to market and sell its software products across its primary European and Russian‑speaking markets.
- Delivered a custom CMS that met all functional and localization requirements, giving EMS complete control over content, product data, and regional variations without relying on third‑party tools.
- Established a scalable, modular architecture that allowed new features, languages, and product lines to be added with minimal engineering overhead.
- Achieved strong performance and reliability, with XML/XSLT caching significantly reducing page‑generation time and supporting consistent uptime as the platform grew.
