Vite Migration
Common Wealth Retirement / November 2023
Goals
- Reducing the excessive 20-minute delay in the delivery pipeline was essential to prevent a complete stall in deployment velocity. As the platform expanded, the existing infrastructure reached a threshold where build durations threatened to render continuous integration unmanageable, making a fundamental change in the build strategy necessary for operational survival.
To address a critical bottleneck where frontend build times had escalated to 20 minutes, I led a comprehensive architectural migration from a legacy Webpack-based pipeline to Vite. The primary objective was to halt the trajectory of ballooning CI/CD overhead and provide a sustainable, high-performance development environment capable of supporting continued platform growth. The migration required a deep dive into bespoke configurations and custom build tools that had been tightly coupled with the previous ecosystem. A significant technical challenge involved replacing libraries like loadable-components which relied on Webpack-specific internals. I successfully reimplemented this core functionality using native Vite APIs, ensuring that code-splitting and lazy-loading capabilities remained intact while benefiting from modern ESM-based bundling. Transitioning the codebase to ES Modules (ESM) represented another major hurdle, as it required move away from legacy CommonJS patterns. This involved auditing internal dependencies and refactoring module resolution strategies to align with Vite’s optimized dev server and build requirements. This shift not only modernized the codebase but also leveraged browser-native features for faster execution. The project concluded with a dramatic optimization of the delivery pipeline, successfully reducing total build times from 20 minutes down to 5 minutes. This 75% improvement significantly accelerated the feedback loop for the engineering team and reduced infrastructure costs, ensuring that the platform's build performance remains stable even as the codebase continues to scale.
Outcomes
- Final build times were reduced from 20 minutes to 5 minutes, representing a 75% increase in pipeline efficiency. This optimization significantly accelerated the feedback loop for the engineering team and drastically lowered CI/CD infrastructure costs.
- The application was successfully transitioned to a native ES Modules (ESM) architecture, eliminating the performance overhead of legacy CommonJS. This modernization ensured full compatibility with modern browser features and more efficient module resolution across the entire platform.
- A custom implementation of code-splitting and lazy loading was integrated using native Vite APIs, successfully replacing the Webpack-dependent logic. This removed the reliance on proprietary library internals while maintaining the sophisticated loading behavior required for a high-traffic application.
- The migration established a scalable build foundation that effectively decoupled build duration from codebase growth. This ensured that future platform expansion would not result in linear time increases, preserving high developer productivity and stable deployment windows.
