Progressive Web App
Common Wealth Retirement / February 2022
Goals
- Transition away from a single-brand, desktop-only architecture to a flexible system capable of supporting four distinct brand identities from a unified codebase.
- Address slow "Time to Interactive" (TTI) and responsiveness issues on mobile devices to ensure the web application provides a user experience comparable to a native app.
- Avoid the technical and administrative burden of managing eight separate app store submissions for a four-brand suite, which would exceed the current team's capacity for native mobile development and maintenance.
To optimize resource allocation while expanding brand reach, I spearheaded the transition from a single-brand desktop application to a multi-tenant Progressive Web App (PWA). While the initial roadmap considered native mobile development, I identified that managing eight separate app store submissions for four distinct brands would exceed the team's operational capacity. By pivoting to a PWA strategy, we successfully achieved a mobile-native feel without the overhead of fragmented codebase maintenance or complex submission cycles. To bridge the performance gap between web and native platforms, I implemented Server-Side Rendering (SSR). This architectural shift significantly improved critical performance metrics, specifically reducing Time to Interactive (TTI). This ensures that users on mobile devices experience near-instant load times and fluid interactions, mimicking the responsiveness of a dedicated mobile application while remaining accessible through a standard web browser. The technical foundation for the white-labeling requirement involved a systemic decoupling of the UI from brand-specific assets. I extracted all thematic elements into a centralized system of CSS variables, allowing the application to dynamically swap color palettes and visual identities for all four brands from a single source of truth. This approach ensured brand consistency across the suite while keeping the CSS architecture lean and maintainable. Finally, to ensure full PWA compliance and offline resilience, I introduced an advanced caching layer utilizing Service Workers. This allows the application to intercept network requests and serve cached assets, ensuring high availability even in low-bandwidth environments. The result is a high-performance, scalable web ecosystem that delivers a premium, branded experience across all devices with minimal deployment friction.
Outcomes
- Successfully avoided the administrative and technical overhead of maintaining eight separate app store submissions, allowing the team to focus on a single, unified codebase.
- Achieved a significant reduction in Time to Interactive (TTI) through Server-Side Rendering, resulting in a web experience that rivals the responsiveness of a native mobile application.
- Enabled the seamless deployment of four distinct brand identities from one source of truth, utilizing dynamic CSS variables to handle all visual transformations.
- Established a reliable, PWA-compliant environment where users can access the application across any device with improved stability and offline capabilities via service worker caching.
