FIRST Cashier
PokerStars / April 2019
Goals
- Migrate the legacy WebCashier 2.0 system to the modern StarsWeb platform to create a more robust and performance-oriented solution for financial transactions.
- Ensure the new system adheres to the FIRST principles by prioritizing speed, intuitive navigation, responsive design, scalability, and data security.
I led the migration of the WebCashier 2.0 system to the new StarsWeb platform under the FIRST Cashier project, which focused on creating a fast, intuitive, responsive, scalable, and trustworthy experience. The transition moved the organization’s primary cashiering capabilities onto a modern framework designed to handle high transaction volumes while maintaining a high standard of system reliability. The technical core of this migration centered on a custom Wizard component I developed to manage complex user journeys. By utilizing a state machine, the component allowed for the declarative definition of various user flows. This architecture supported composition, making it possible to build and reuse specific sequences across different parts of the application. For example, the user onboarding flow was designed to seamlessly incorporate the deposit flow and the Real Money Form, both of which could also function as independent, standalone processes. To further optimize the user experience on the new platform, I leveraged server-side rendering by introducing a specialized service to manage payment methods. This service was specifically engineered to handle payments that required a redirect, effectively removing an unnecessary step in the process. By eliminating this extra hop, I was able to streamline the transaction path and significantly improve the overall flow for the end user. This project successfully replaced the legacy 2.0 system with a robust, performance-oriented solution that prioritized both modularity and efficiency. The combination of the flexible Wizard component and the optimized payment service ensured that the platform remained adaptable for future updates while providing a smooth, high-speed interface for all financial interactions.
Outcomes
- Increased development efficiency by implementing a reusable Wizard component that allowed complex user flows, such as the Real Money Form and deposit sequences, to be composed and redeployed across different parts of the application.
- Improved the user experience by reducing transaction friction, specifically by introducing a server-side service that eliminated an extra step in the payment redirect process.
- Established a scalable architectural foundation that adheres to the FIRST principles, ensuring the system remains responsive and reliable as transaction volumes and user onboarding requirements grow.
