Employer Portal
Common Wealth Retirement / April 2021
Goals
- Solve the problem of disparate client infrastructures by supporting multiple data exchange methods, ranging from direct API integrations to manual file uploads and exports.
- Develop a dedicated platform to automate core employer tasks, including employee onboarding, pension payroll deductions, and termination processing.
The original single-application architecture presented a significant scaling problem as the company expanded its B2B offerings. To resolve the architectural rigidity and the risk of code duplication between the flagship product and the new enterprise tools, the frontend codebase was transformed into a modular monorepo using Lerna. This structural shift addressed the challenge of managing shared logic and UI components, ensuring a unified development environment for multiple platforms. The primary driver for this transition was the development of a dedicated employer application designed to streamline pension management. This platform solved the problem of manual overhead by allowing employers to manage employee pension payroll deductions directly. It also centralized the entire lifecycle of a plan participant, from initial onboarding to the final termination of employees within the pension scheme. To address varying levels of technical maturity among B2B clients, the application was built to handle diverse payroll integration hurdles. The system resolved data synchronization issues by supporting multiple integration tiers, including direct API connections for real-time processing and manual file upload/download workflows for legacy environments. This flexibility ensured that employers could maintain accurate payroll records regardless of their existing infrastructure. By moving to a monorepo, the development team eliminated the friction of cross-project dependency management. This allowed for the rapid deployment of these complex B2B features while maintaining the integrity of the original consumer application.
Outcomes
- The architectural overhaul removed the deployment bottlenecks of the original single-app structure, allowing the company to launch and scale its secondary B2B offering without slowing down the development of the primary consumer product.
- Delivered a flexible integration layer that solved the challenge of disparate payroll systems, allowing B2B clients to sync data through their preferred methods, including direct APIs and file-based imports.
- Developed a functional platform that automated the end-to-end management of employee pension lifecycles, effectively reducing the manual overhead previously required for onboarding, payroll deductions, and terminations.
