Rational Sportsbook
PokerStars / March 2015
Goals
- Build a proprietary sports betting platform from the ground up to support the company's expansion into the global sportsbook market.
- Develop a high-performance, multi-tier architecture using C++ for bet settlement and Java for data processing to ensure fast and reliable market updates.
- Deliver a highly responsive user interface capable of handling a massive volume of real-time data updates
The project focused on building a high-performance, multi-tier sports betting platform designed to integrate third-party market data with a custom execution engine. The architecture featured a C++ core layer dedicated to high-speed bet settlement, interfaced with a Java-based middleware responsible for processing complex event feeds and managing market queries. To ensure development velocity despite intermittent third-party API availability, I engineered a mock service that simulated real-time event feeds, which became a critical asset for stress testing and local environment stability. On the frontend, the application underwent a significant architectural evolution. Initially built with Angular, we discovered the framework struggled to maintain performance under the high frequency of DOM updates required by live, fluctuating betting odds. Consequently, I led the migration of the consumer-facing application to React, leveraging its more efficient rendering patterns to handle the high-volume data streams. For internal operations, I developed a sophisticated control plane using ExtJS, which functioned as an administrative overlay. This panel was integrated via an iframe and utilized a robust postMessage protocol to facilitate secure, cross-origin communication between the management tools and the core application. The project culminated in a successful MVP demonstration that proved the viability of the custom stack and the seamless integration of its disparate technical layers. However, following a strategic pivot, the company opted to transition to an off-the-shelf solution to accelerate time-to-market, leading to the project’s sunset. Despite the cancellation, the initiative delivered a high-fidelity proof of concept that successfully pushed the boundaries of real-time data visualization and complex system interoperability.
Outcomes
- Successfully delivered a high-performance MVP that integrated a C++ settlement engine, Java data processing, and a React frontend to prove technical viability.
- Engineered a robust mocking service and an ExtJS-based administrative control plane, allowing for end-to-end system management and testing independent of third-party data availability.
- Provided the business with a fully functional proprietary codebase that met all technical requirements before the strategic decision was made to shift to a third-party vendor solution.
