Goals
- Ensure a media-heavy portfolio loads instantly for users worldwide, regardless of their device or connection speed, by minimizing the data overhead of high-resolution imagery.
- Provide the client with a robust, familiar administrative interface for managing galleries while maintaining complete creative freedom over the frontend user experience and technical stack.
This project involved the architectural design and implementation of a high-performance, headless CMS solution to power a responsive photography portfolio. By decoupling the backend from the presentation layer, the system utilizes Drupal as a robust content management engine, while a React frontend delivers a fluid, modern user interface. This separation of concerns allows for a highly tailored administrative experience for content updates alongside a fast, dynamic viewing experience for site visitors. To ensure optimal performance and SEO, the application employs Server-Side Rendering (SSR). A sophisticated image delivery pipeline was engineered to prioritize user experience through progressive loading. This system automatically serves the smallest possible image versions initially and scales up to higher resolutions as needed. This process is powered by a custom-written Drupal storage plugin and AWS Lambda@Edge functions, which facilitate real-time image resizing and optimization directly at the network edge. The infrastructure is built on a scalable, serverless-oriented architecture within AWS. The backend services are containerized and deployed via AWS Fargate, supported by a managed AWS Aurora database for reliable data persistence. By adopting a "no local storage" policy, all media assets are offloaded to Amazon S3, ensuring the application remains stateless and highly available while keeping the footprint of the compute instances minimal. The entire deployment lifecycle is automated through a modern CI/CD pipeline. Using AWS CodeBuild, any code changes pushed to the repository are immediately built and deployed. This ensures that the latest features and content are distributed globally through AWS CloudFront, providing low-latency access and a seamless experience for users regardless of their geographic location.
Outcomes
- The site achieves near-instantaneous load times through the edge-based image optimization pipeline, leading to improved Core Web Vitals and a more fluid browsing experience for potential clients, regardless of their network connection.
- The photographer now possesses an intuitive, frictionless CMS interface, allowing her to update her portfolio, add new sessions, and manage client bookings independently without needing to touch code or wait for developer updates.
- The serverless architecture ensures the site remains stable under any volume of traffic, eliminating the risk of downtime or performance bottlenecks during peak periods (like seasonal booking spikes) without requiring manual server oversight.
- With the fully automated CI/CD pipeline, any design adjustments or new feature requests are deployed to production in minutes rather than hours, ensuring the site always remains competitive and up-to-date.
