Tele2 Kiosk

Personal projects / March 2012

Goals

  • Develop a proactive customer acquisition tool for high-traffic retail environments that identifies and captures potential subscribers outside of traditional storefronts.
  • Implement an interactive discovery questionnaire that analyzes individual usage patterns to recommend the most cost-effective and relevant Tele2 mobile plans for each user.
  • Establish an over-the-air (OTA) deployment pipeline to remotely update Android APKs, allowing the kiosks to pivot between different promotional campaigns and app variations without physical maintenance.
  • Reduce friction in the sign-up process by providing an intuitive, self-service interface that guides users from plan discovery to service enrollment autonomously.

To provide a seamless customer acquisition tool for Tele2, this project focused on the development of interactive retail kiosks designed for high-traffic environments such as shopping malls. At the heart of the user experience was a consultative discovery tool that guided potential customers through a series of questions regarding their mobile habits, data usage, and calling preferences. By analyzing these inputs in real-time, the application would recommend a specific Tele2 plan tailored to the individual’s unique needs, effectively digitizing the role of a traditional sales representative. The technical foundation of the system was built on the Android platform, allowing for a robust and familiar development environment. Each iteration of the experience was packaged as a standalone APK, providing the flexibility to pivot the kiosk’s functionality based on current marketing goals. This architecture ensured that the hardware could remain a permanent fixture while the software evolved to meet the demands of different retail seasons or promotional events. To manage these updates efficiently, the project utilized over-the-air (OTA) deployment capabilities. This allowed the Tele2 team to remotely upload and install new APK versions across the entire fleet of devices without requiring physical access to the kiosks. This streamlined update cycle was critical for maintaining several app variations simultaneously, ensuring that the kiosks always showcased the most relevant promotions and seasonal offers. By combining personalized plan discovery with a flexible, remotely managed software stack, the kiosk project provided Tele2 with a scalable and low-maintenance channel for customer engagement. The system not only simplified the onboarding process for new users but also gave the brand a dynamic digital presence that could adapt quickly to a fast-moving telecommunications market.

Outcomes

  • Successfully deployed a network of self-service kiosks in malls that autonomously guided users through the discovery and sign-up process, reducing the need for on-site sales staff.
  • Provided Tele2 with a modular and cost-effective physical touchpoint that could be easily relocated or updated to respond to changing market trends and regional demands.
  • Implemented an interactive diagnostic tool that increased conversion rates by providing personalized Tele2 plan recommendations based on real-time user input.
